The Effect of a Diabetes Education

Abstract
This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of diabetes education. The subjects of study were 35 admitted diabetic patients who participated in four day education program. Data were gathered form January to March, 1992 by means of an instrument developed from two diabetic knowledge tests which were equivalent in item differentiation and item discrimination coefficients. Data were analyzed using percentage, paired t-test, t or F tests. The result of this study were as follows: 1) There was a statistically significant difference in diabetes knowledge score before and after the education program(t=-3.84, p=.001). The diabetes knowledge was a statistically significantly different in diabetic complication(t=-2.83, p=.008), nutrition regimen(t=-4. 90, p=.000), test and general management for diabetes(t=-2.79, p=.009). 2) The score of diabetes knowledge after education was different according to the demographic variables. Higher education level and the employed subjects had higher score and(t=4.07, p=.027 : t=2.13, p=.041) men had higher knowledge scores than women(t=2.29, p=.029). 3) The diabetic knowledge difference before and after education according to structural variables of diabetes were significantly different. Diabetic knowledge difference of subject who admitted hospital were higher than those who did not admitted them(t=3.02, p=.005), Also, there was a significantly difference before and after education score of subjects who have read books about diabetes(t=2.74, p=.010) and who did not had a diabetes education(t=-2.17, p=.040). 4) The subjects evaluated that books, booklets and videotapes for diabetes education were the most effective and wanted to team approach education for diabetes education counseller. Also, respondents indicated that nutrition, complication, insuline therapy in order were the most educationally important. In conclusion, these data suggest that the diabetes education may provide valuable information on the diabetic self care. In general, these data suggest that even diabetes group education can be effective in increasing diabetes knowledge for individuals with adequate personal resources, but current education program need to develop relevant and appropriate education methods and further identified a need for education materials and further identified a need for education materials development related to psychological and social aspects of diabetes care.
